Hi,

The PubSub tutorial mentions – ‘OPC UA PubSub defines also secure communication, but this is not yet supported by the Prosys OPC UA SDK for Java’.

Just wanted to know by when this would be added in the SDK. Currently, we are evaluating Prosys Java based SDK.

Thanks,
Deepali

Hi,

Currently I do not have any estimate to give. You are one of the firsts to ask for this.

When would you need it, assuming you are asking for that reason?

In general, for production deployments, this would be a primary requirement, isn’t it?

That would depend on what exactly is your production environment and what requirements you have for it (e.g. which type of UA PubSub you would use, UDP-UADP, MQTT-UADP/JSON or AMQP-UADP/JSON).

For example, IF (big if) the production environment is as such where it has been perfectly fine previously to run the Security Mode NONE for the client-server connections e.g. within a factory, you might not have the need for security for e.g. UDP-UADP PubSub. If you have a closed network, this may be fine in some cases.

But yes, obiviously it would be nice to have the security option in PubSub. It is non-trivial to implement. I’m not sure is there any SDK or existing product that would yet support it.

If we are talking about UDP-UADP and would have to serve the keys directly from the Publisher’s address space (i.e. no “Security Key Service” available scenario, https://reference.opcfoundation.org/v104/Core/docs/Part14/5.4.3/), like, maybe we will have it during next year, but that is just a guess at this point. If something else, might happen faster, depends on how much that particular feature is asked (and how hard it is to implement compared to other requests).

P.S.
In general more new features (such as PubSub added in 1.04 with it’s numerous conf options) are added to OPC UA basically every year than it is practical to implement them. Not all added features make sense (or be used) from the context of our SDKs and it’s users. Thus therefore me asking is this something you _really_ need and would actually use it or are you just asking (since this sometimes happen). And if needed, when that would be. Of course eventually it would be nice to support just everything, but I’m not seeing that to happen anytime soon with the pace of new features being added.

Thanks. Yes, even we could not find much products that support it.
I assume even the other SDKs of Prosys (C++/.Net) don’t have this support. Could you please confirm.

Hello,
.Net-based OPC UA SDKs don’t have PubSub features yet. Ansi C and C++ based OPC UA SDKs contain PubSub SDKs. But they don’t support Message Security, either.
