Hello,
Is there a convenient way for an OPC server application to use the list of valid Linux (or other OS) users to validate a client connection’s user name and password?

Not at the moment. You will need to write that mapping yourself into the application. We have experimented a little bit with Windows (Active Directory tokens using GSS-API) user accounts, but there is nothing official at the moment.
